The New BMW X5 and First-Ever Electric BMW iX5 Revealed

BMW has unveiled the fifth generation of the BMW X5, introducing a completely redesigned luxury Sports Activity Vehicle alongside the first-ever fully electric BMW iX5.

The new BMW X5 represents a significant step forward in design, technology, and powertrain choice. It is the first BMW model engineered to support five different drive systems as part of its global line-up: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, fully electric and hydrogen fuel-cell power.

For UK customers, the all-electric BMW iX5, diesel and plug-in hybrid BMW X5 variants are expected to arrive from spring 2027.

The first fully electric BMW iX5

One of the biggest developments is the introduction of the BMW iX5 60 xDrive, the first X5 to be powered entirely by electricity.

Its advanced electric drivetrain and 800-volt architecture are designed to set a new benchmark within the luxury electric SUV segment. The BMW iX5 60 xDrive offers a provisional WLTP driving range of up to 525 miles, giving customers greater flexibility for both everyday journeys and longer-distance travel.

The new electrical system also supports DC rapid charging at up to 460kW when connected to a compatible charger. This could significantly reduce charging stops during longer journeys and help make the BMW iX5 a practical option for drivers moving to an electric luxury SUV.

Range and charging figures remain provisional and may vary depending on the final vehicle specification, driving conditions, charging infrastructure and other factors.

Five different drive systems

The new X5 is the first BMW model developed to accommodate five different powertrain technologies within its global range.

Depending on the market, customers will be able to choose from:

  • Fully electric power
  • Plug-in hybrid power
  • Diesel engines
  • Petrol engines
  • Hydrogen fuel-cell technology

This wide-ranging approach allows the new BMW X5 to meet different customer needs and infrastructure requirements around the world.

The hydrogen-powered model will join the international range at a later stage. UK launch plans currently focus on the electric BMW iX5 together with diesel and plug-in hybrid X5 variants.

A bold new BMW X5 design

The fifth-generation BMW X5 introduces a new interpretation of BMW’s Neue Klasse design language.

Its exterior has a cleaner and more contemporary appearance while retaining the strong proportions and road presence associated with the X5. A new double-X daytime-running-light signature gives the front of the vehicle a distinctive identity.

New BMW Winglet door handles are positioned discreetly within the upper section of the doors, helping to create a smoother side profile. Optional automatic soft-close doors will provide an additional level of convenience and refinement.

Customers will have a broad choice of personalisation options, including eleven exterior paint finishes and alloy wheels measuring up to 23 inches.

M Sport, M Sport Pro and M Performance models will each introduce their own design details, allowing customers to choose a more athletic interpretation of the new BMW X5.

A completely redesigned interior

The interior of the new BMW X5 has also been extensively redesigned.

At the centre of the new cabin is BMW Panoramic iDrive, which presents important driving and vehicle information across the lower section of the windscreen. This places key details within the driver’s natural line of sight while creating a more open and modern dashboard design.

An optional BMW Passenger Display provides a dedicated digital screen for the front passenger, offering additional entertainment and connectivity functions.

The interior also introduces new colours, finishes and materials, including the option of slate. These elements are intended to provide a more contemporary and individual cabin environment while retaining the comfort expected from a BMW luxury SUV.
