With brighter days on the horizon, spring is one of the most popular times of year for drivers across Northern Ireland to upgrade their car. But before you advertise your vehicle or arrange a part exchange, a thorough spring clean could significantly increase its appeal – and its value.
Local retailer Agnew Belfast Volvo, located on Boucher Way, has shared expert advice to help drivers prepare their car for sale and make the best possible first impression.
After months of winter driving, vehicles often show signs of heavier wear – from muddy interiors to paintwork affected by road salt. According to the team at Agnew Belfast Volvo, cars that are properly prepared consistently achieve stronger buyer interest and higher part-exchange valuations.
Ciaran Dinsmore, Head of Business at Agnew Belfast Volvo, explains:
“Spring is one of the busiest times of year for people changing their cars. After winter, vehicles often show signs of heavier use – from interior wear to road salt affecting paintwork. There is a stark difference in both buyer interest and part exchange valuations when a car has been properly prepared, even when mileage and age are the same.”
1. Declutter Completely: Start by removing all personal belongings, including paperwork, charging cables, loose items under seats and anything stored in the boot. A clutter-free interior helps potential buyers visualise themselves in the car and creates a more neutral, showroom-ready feel.
2. Deep Clean the Interior: Vacuum thoroughly, paying close attention to footwells, seat creases, and hard-to-reach areas. Clean dashboards, infotainment screens, door panels, and centre consoles using appropriate products to restore a fresh, well-maintained finish. A clean cabin instantly signals that the car has been well cared for.
3. Revive Seats and Upholstery: Stained or worn seats can quickly reduce a car’s perceived value. Use the correct cleaner for fabric or leather upholstery, and condition leather seats where possible to restore softness and prevent cracking. Eliminating lingering odours can also help recreate that sought-after “nearly new” feel.
4. Restore the Exterior Shine: Winter grime, tar and road salt can dull paintwork and, if left untreated, may lead to corrosion. A thorough wash – including alloys and wheel arches – followed by a polish or wax will enhance shine and help protect the bodywork. Clean paintwork also makes a big difference to online photos, which are often a buyer’s first impression.
5. Check the Finishing Touches: Small details matter. Top up screen wash, replace worn wiper blades, ensure tyres are correctly inflated and clean, and check that all lights are working. These minor fixes can positively influence how a buyer or retailer assesses your car.
