What can we expect from the smart EQ, debuting at Geneva?

EQ - Electric Intelligence by Mercedes-Benz

The Mercedes-Benz electric mobility project has been branded as EQ - standing for “Electric Intelligence”. The new brand will encompass all aspects of electric mobility, and will extend beyond the vehicles themselves, offering a comprehensive ecosystem of products, services, technologies and innovations. It was recently announced at the Geneva Motor Show that the smart EQ will be spearheading the EQ brand for parent company Mercedes-Benz.

The smart EQ Electric Drive

Electric Drive has a new look, the smart EQ ForTwo, smart EQ ForFour & the smart EQ ForTwo Cabrio, scheduled to be available from May 2018. During the Geneva launch the company’s chief executive, Dr Annette Winkler, said: "With the smart EQ ForTwo/ForFour, we are putting the first products from the Mercedes-Benz Cars EQ family on urban roads and showing how much fun electric mobility can be."

Zero driving emissions

For the environmentally conscious the EQ smart cars will produce zero emissions, meaning that drivers will be doing their bit for the environment, helping to make towns and cities cleaner. With an expected driving range of up to 99 miles on a single charge, the smart EQ’s will offer the convenience and enjoyment of a standard smart Car but with zero emissions. Additional benefits will include reduced running costs compared to their fossil fuel powered siblings plus lower road tax and other savings such as free or subsidised parking & inner-city congestion charges. Furthermore, smart is so far the only car manufacturer to offer their full model line-up as an EV, Electric Vehicle, option.

Responsive Driving

Unlike petrol & diesel-powered cars electric vehicles produce maximum power and torque, which is delivered to the road wheels, from low revs so when you press the accelerator pedal there is no lag time. Therefore, the smart EQ fortwo and forfour models will feel even more agile and responsive than their petrol-powered counterparts, and they are also energy efficient too! By using a regenerative braking system to harness kinetic energy, similar to the KERS system used in F1, every time you apply the brakes the energy produced helps to charge the cars battery.

Charging the smart EQ

The quickest method of recharging the smart EQ is by using a purpose built high powered charging unit using the supplied charging cable. These can be installed in your garage, carport or company car park and will recharge the cars battery from 20% to 100% fully charged in just 3.5 hours. You can also use a domestic power socket but it takes longer, up to approximately 6 hours. If you need to recharge when you’re on a journey there are now many charging stations conveniently located across Northern Ireland, from motorway services to supermarkets and public car parks, but it’s probably still wise to plan ahead!
