Northern Ireland EV Drivers Report Record Satisfaction in 2025 Survey

Electric vehicle (EV) drivers across Northern Ireland are more positive than ever about life with their cars, according to the latest annual survey from the Electric Vehicle Association Northern Ireland (EVANI).

The 2025 EVANI survey highlights record levels of driver satisfaction, easier access to charging, growing confidence in range, and a surge in demand for used EVs. Unlike general consumer studies, the survey captures the real-world experiences of EV drivers in Northern Ireland, making it a valuable insight into how the market is evolving.

At Agnew, we continue to see this trend reflected across our brand dealerships, with more customers than ever choosing electric as their next vehicle.

Drivers Are Sticking With Electric

Over 90% of drivers said their next car will “likely” or “definitely” be another EV - a figure that shows once you make the switch, it’s hard to go back. Only 1% said “definitely no” to choosing an EV again.

A Major Shift in Public Charging Access

Back in 2022, nearly two-thirds of drivers (67.8%) reported they “often” or “always” had to wait for a charger. Today, just 4.9% experience this problem - a dramatic improvement of nearly 63 percent in four years.

This growing confidence is helping more drivers consider EV ownership, supported by investment in home charging, workplace solutions, and expanding public networks across Northern Ireland.

Range Confidence Grows

Battery technology continues to boost driver confidence. This year, 87.5% of drivers said they are very satisfied with their car’s range, which is up from last year. As a result, charging habits are becoming less frequent, with almost a third of drivers (30.9%) now charging only several times a month.

If you’re considering making the switch, our brand partners, including Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, MINI, Porsche, Volvo, Volkswagen and Volkswagen Commercials, all offer models with an impressive range.

Strong Growth in the Used EV Market

The second-hand EV market is expanding rapidly. In 2023, just over 1 in 5 buyers (21.9%) sourced their EV second-hand. That number has now risen to almost 4 in 10 drivers (36.9%), showing that affordability and wider availability are making used EVs an increasingly popular choice.

At Agnew, our Approved Used EV Stock continues to grow, with finance options available to make electric driving more accessible.

EVs as the Main Household Car

EVs are no longer a “second car” in many households. For 87.5% of EV drivers, their electric vehicle is now the main or only car they use. More than a quarter of these households (26.5%) own more than one EV. Where petrol or diesel cars remain, they typically cover less than half the mileage of the EV (11,480 miles vs 4,998 miles per year).

Why Drivers Switch and What Holds Others Back

Lower running costs and tax savings are leading motivators, with 56.6% citing them as the main reason to switch. Environmental concerns drive around 22% of buyers. However, misinformation is still slowing adoption, with respondents pointing to “fear mongering on social media” and “false information in the media” as common barriers.

EVANI Chair Comments

Mark McCall, Chair of EVANI, said:
“This year’s survey shows just how far EV adoption has come in Northern Ireland. Satisfaction rates are higher than ever, charging access is being transformed, and more households are choosing EVs as their main or only car. While misinformation remains a challenge, the facts are clear – drivers who make the switch are happier, save money, and never look back.”
